Let’s Make a Plan
I love a good plan. As a Physical Therapist, a significant portion of my time in the clinic involves helping my patients work through a plan for their recovery.
The most successful patients are those who both realize the importance of a plan and understand the value of flexibility. After all, not all recovery plans are the same and your knee replacement recovery may look different than your friend’s recovery. That’s ok!
As your knee replacement approaches and you plan your recovery, the key to your success will be your flexibility—and not just in your hamstrings.
That’s because, after surgery, you’ll have great days as well as awful days, with a mix of mediocre and stagnant days in between.
But don’t let that keep you from achieving your goal: full recovery after your knee replacement so you can get back to doing the things you love!
For you, that might be hiking with your dogs or getting on the floor to play with your grandchildren. You may need to get back to working construction, coaching wrestling, or teaching kindergarteners, like a few of my patients.
These are all great goals, and in Part 3 I’ll show you how to use your goals as motivation to keep you going.
Now my goal for you is this: I want you to feel 100% confident in your total knee replacement recovery plan, from what you do before surgery to what you continue after completing physical therapy—all so that you can achieve your goals.
Why I Wrote This Book
There are quite a few books covering what to expect from a knee replacement, what you should ask your doctor, and how to manage pain and other symptoms.
As a physical therapist, I answer these questions daily in the clinic, and I will answer them in this book too! But among all of the resources out there, something was missing: a structured plan for what to do before surgery and after completing physical therapy.
Think of this book as a template or a framework. Its objective is twofold: 1) to strengthen your muscles before surgery and 2) to improve your strength, balance, coordination, and endurance once you’ve finished 6–8 weeks of PT following your total knee replacement.

About the author
Tim Fraticelli, DPT is a licensed physical therapist with extensive training in orthopedic rehabilitation, specifically knee replacement therapy. With over a decade of experience guiding patients through recovery, he saw the need for a structured approach for patients to follow before and after surgery. In collaboration with board certified orthopedic surgeons, he wrote this book to bring safe and effective strategies for maximizing results after a total knee replacement.
